The EU Commission has had a consulting team review the structure of the alcohol duties system in the UK. The recent Brexit referendum has left many UK producers up in arms about trade with the rest of the EU. Alan Powell, a specialist excise duties consultant, stated, “… The UK is still subject to the EU rules and may be even if the UK leaves the EU…” Despite the result, the review has revealed that the current excise system actually “works pretty well and little change is really needed.” There is a need, however, to “re-evaluate the lack of effective provision in EU law for reduced rates for small spirits producers.” It is still up in the air if change will come.
