In May of 2017, the FDA will begin enforcing the menu labeling requirements that were initially added to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) in 2010. The FD&C Act will affect the menus of chain restaurants and other retail food outlets by making it necessary to state calorie information. Not only will calorie information for food be a necessity, but it will also require calorie information for alcoholic beverages. The compliance date of December 1, 2016 is when the FDA was able to begin “using appropriated funding to implement, administer, or enforce the menu labeling requirements.” It has already been noted, however, that enforcement will not come until five months into 2017.
US consumers are more health conscious than ever. Drinkers are turning to organic options and with the calorie information of alcohol brands staring at them in the face, there is a possibility that they could be influenced to choose alcohol with a better nutritional standing.
