Surprisingly, the average household throws away almost two full glasses of wine a week on average! That equates to tossing roughly 624 million bottles of wine a year. The primary reason consumers throw away wine is because they are unsure how long it can be kept after opening. On average, white wines will last 3-7 days after opening and sparkling and red wines will keep for 3-5 days after the cork is pulled. The wine with the largest misunderstanding is champagne, which most consumers expect will go flat rapidly and is subsequently tossed that evening or the day after. In fact, champagne will retain its fizziness surprisingly well, even without being re-corked, for as long as 3 days after opening.
The next time you are out and order a glass of wine, remember to ask “Which of these bottles did you open most recently?”
