Under current New York state law it is illegal for consumers to receive shipments from out-of-state wine retailers. In New York a consumer can purchase a bottle of wine directly from an out-of-state vineyard or have it shipped from an in-state retailer.
A new Bill sponsored by Democrat Amy Paulin and Republican Terrence Murphy would introduce a new law allowing consumers to purchase directly from out-of-state retailers and have the wine shipped directly to their home address. The measure is being promoted on a new website – WineFreedom.org and supporters argue that this Bill would increase sales tax revenue and expand New York’s e-commerce market. Another benefit would be the increased options of wine to consumers, many exotic or rare labels are not typically stocked in local retailers but would be available for purchase online.
