The recent boom of healthier alcoholic drink options reflects the trend of US consumers living healthier lifestyles. The trend has resulted in a surge of investment from producers in low to non-alcoholic, organic, and natural beverages. It is essential that suppliers remember the TTB’s regulations regarding health related statements on their labels. Any statements that infer a relationship between alcohol and health benefits, suggest a “physical or psychological sensation” as result of alcohol consumption, and “claims of nutritional value” are all forbidden. Statements that imply a connection to a disease or “refer consumers to a third party” regarding health effects of alcohol are also prohibited. The TTB is taking health related statements on labels seriously and could require a disclaimer if a claim is misleading.
