Erica Duecy, Founder and Host of Business of Drinks, discussed Millennial alcohol buyers at Bar Convent Brooklyn and why they represent the most critical, high-value adult consumer group in modern beverage alcohol. Representing one-third of all alcohol-buying households and the largest single share of the U.S. labor force, millennials aren’t abandoning alcohol are applying unprecedented scrutiny to every drinking occasion.

Park Street Imports is the back-office and importing solution for alcoholic beverage brands launching and scaling in the U.S. market.

Erica Duecy’s Presentation Transcript

I’m Erica Duecy, founder and podcast host of Business of Drinks, which is also a drinks advisory helping emerging brands translate data into strategies that drive growth.

While the industry spends a lot of time talking about Gen Z, I’d argue that if your primary goal is driving commercial sales in 2026, Millennials are the more urgent strategy to dial in. The data across all major sources is clear: Millennials are not abandoning alcohol, but they are becoming significantly more selective. We need to engage them not as “young drinkers,” but as high-value adult consumers.

Millennials as the High-Value Core

Millennials are a core beverage alcohol consumer—they are not an emerging audience.

  • Demographic Scale: There are roughly 74 million Millennials in the U.S.

  • Economic Power: They represent approximately one-third of all alcohol-buying households and form the single largest share of the U.S. labor force.

  • Key Life Stage: They are at a pivotal life stage for adult beverages, making routine decisions around hosting, dining out, grocery shopping, travel, gifting, at-home imbibing, and convenience-driven occasions.

Millennials are applying far more scrutiny to every purchase. The brands that win will be the ones that explicitly fit into the specific occasions Millennials care about.

Decoding Millennial Moderation & Wellness

The shift toward moderation among Millennials is widely discussed, but frequently misunderstood.

│ • 57% of Millennials planned to reduce overall alcohol intake in 2025. │
│ • ~75% of Millennial No/Low consumers reported moderating in the last 6 mos.│
│ • Dynamic Behavior: Moderation does NOT equal absolute teetotalism. │

Millennials aren’t just jumping from full-proof alcohol straight to non-alcoholic (NA) alternatives. They alternate: drinking water between serves, choosing lower-ABV options, or substituting with THC or functional beverages depending on the day.

Because Millennials are drinking less frequently, every drink has to work harder. It must earn the occasion and justify its price, ABV, calorie count, and how the consumer wants to feel the next morning.

Separating “Better-for-You” Terminology

“Better-for-you” is no longer just a marketing claim—it is a strict consumer purchase filter. Brands must separate three concepts that often get conflated:

  1. Health (What is Reduced): Lower calories, lower sugar, lower ABV.

  2. Wellness (The Broader Lifestyle Promise): Ingredient transparency, organic sourcing, and next-day impact.

  3. Function (What the Drink Does): Offers relaxation, energy, hydration, or social participation.

A great example of a brand executing this clearly is Avaline wine. They offer a concrete wellness promise: organic grapes, total ingredient transparency, zero added sugar, and an approachable lifestyle voice. Avoid vague wellness claims—make your brand promises specific and credible.

The Competition is Occasion, Not Category

Millennials do not choose exclusively between wine, beer, spirits, and RTDs. They navigate a broad adult beverage portfolio—spanning full-ABV, non-alc, low-ABV RTDs, THC, and functional drinks—sometimes within the same week or even the same day.

The competitive set is no longer defined by liquid category; it is defined by the consumer occasion.

Millennials are trying to perform specific “jobs”: unwind, host, celebrate, recover, focus, participate, or make a weeknight feel special.

  • Blue Moon & Tito’s: Win by offering extreme familiarity, reliability, and ease of use across versatile occasions.

  • Ghia, Phony Negroni, & Cann: Solve for social participation without alcohol, preserving cocktail rituals while giving consumers complete control.

  • High Noon & Archer Roost: Demonstrate the logic of RTDs—single-serve, portable, transparent, and built for casual social moments.

Key Takeaway: Don’t just ask, “What category are we in?” Ask: “What job is my drink being hired to do?”

Format as Strategy & Reducing Friction

RTDs succeed because they eliminate friction from the beverage occasion—no recipe, no bartender, and no uncertainty regarding flavor, ABV, or serving size. RTDs now represent over 12% of total alcohol dollar sales, with NIQ reporting 4% to 5% year-over-year growth across RTD subcategories for four consecutive years.

│ [SEE IT] ──> [UNDERSTAND IT] ──> [FIND IT] ──> [RECOGNIZE IT] ──> [BUY IT] │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘

More than 65% of beverage purchases are planned before entering a store (NIQ shopper data). Distribution alone does not equal demand generation. If a shopper doesn’t instantly understand what the product is and when to drink it, friction will kill the sale and cause them to switch to an easier alternative.

Perform a “friction audit” on your brand: Is the ABV clear? Is the format simple? Can it be found cold near the front of the store?

Social Media as a Decision System

For Millennials (ages 30 to 49), social media is not a singular marketing channel—it is an integrated decision system where different platforms perform distinct roles:

  • TikTok & Instagram Reels: Drive initial discovery and show short-form use cases (flavor, serve, occasion, vibe).

  • YouTube: Educates through long-form founder stories, liquid credentials, and category context.

  • Instagram: Creates lifestyle desire through visual hosting, cocktail culture, and event imagery.

  • Reddit & User Reviews: Provide authentic validation and peer proof (authenticity matters far more than polished production here).

  • Retail Media: Captures the final conversion (driving product format, price, and local store availability).

Do not post the same creative everywhere. Tailor content to match what the consumer is looking for on that specific platform.

The 5-Question Strategic Checklist for Brands & Distributors

Before launching a product, pitching a buyer, building a retail display, or running a campaign, evaluate your strategy against these five pillars:

  1. FIT: Does the product fit a real occasion and lifestyle need state in a person’s life?

  2. FUNCTION: Does it perform a function the consumer explicitly values (e.g., flavor, relaxation, convenience, hosting ease)?

  3. FRICTION: Is it simple to understand, locate, purchase, serve, and share?

  4. FLEXIBILITY: Does it support how Millennials actually drink across the full spectrum (from full-strength ABV to zero-proof)?

  5. FAMILIARITY: Has the consumer encountered enough social proof (via friends, creators, menus, reviews, or awards) to trust the product?

If your answer to any of these five questions is weak, that is precisely where your brand needs to focus its efforts. Align your product with real Millennial need states, and your brand will move from being just another bottle on the shelf to being the obvious choice for the moment.

Thank you.
